Xiaoqi John Doe was the first victim of the "The Henan Gay Murderer", a nickname used to describe Chinese serial killer Li Zhanguo, who raped and mutilated 11 mentally disabled teenagers and young adults before being arrested and executed.
Case[]
On 18 March 1991, authorities in the Xiaoqi Township in China's Henan province received a report stating that there was a fire burning in a field as a set of wheat straws had caught alight. The police extinguished the fire and discovered the charred body of a headless young man laying on his back. The decedent had been disembowelled and his genitalia severed, which was recovered in a ditch southwest of the field. Police dogs were utilized to search for the decedent's head, which was recovered from a well 24 meters away to the west of the crime scene. An autopsy found that the decedent's stomach contents consisted of vegetable leaves, banana peels, and other food, indicating that he had died recently. A coroner also noted strangulation marks to his throat made with a cord, leading to the case being classified as a homicide.
The police attached great importance to the case but nobody came forward to identify the deceased, leading to the police putting notices in major and regional newspapers but to no avail. The only bit of information on his life that authorities could gleam is that the deceased may have been a beggar.
