Whatcom County John Doe was a man whose remains were found inside of a chimney in Bellingham, Washington, on September 20, 1987.
Case[]
The victim was found near the bottom of a chimney, inside of a Georgia-Pacific facility. The chimney's pipes carried water heated by boiler exhaust, and as a result, temperatures inside could reach up to 370 degrees, leaving the remains badly damaged.
The chimney in question was noted as being extremely difficult to get into, leading police to suspect that either the decedent had been murdered, or that he simply died by suicide. His cause of death is listed as being attributed to hypothermia, however, his manner of death could not be established. An autopsy performed on the remains revealed multiple broken bones, which suggests that he may have fallen into the chimney; however, it is not known whether or not the bone fractures had occurred postmortem.
