The victim was found partially submerged in a watering hole by three female hikers about a mile east of the I-17 and near mile marker 254. An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper who was called to the scene confirmed the victim was deceased and subsequently contacted the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.
The victim was found nude, but personal items and possibly other physical evidence were located near the watering hole. At the time of the initial investigation, the YCSO viewed the nature of the death as suspicious.
On July 12, 2023, the victim was identified as Velmurugan Ramnathan, who was from Phoenix, Arizona. Velmurugan's death was determined to be accidental drowning, and no other injuries were found in his body.
