"Tod Motor Doe" was the nickname given to an identity thief who died by suicide in his motel room. He is believed to be of Germanic origin.
Discovery[]
The decedent checked into the Tod Motor Motel in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 21, 2006. He paid in advance for a three-week stay. Staff did not see the decedent again following his arrival. A maintenance worker found the decedent's body on September 11 after he failed to check out of the motel. The decedent was lying in bed holding a gun in his right hand. He had shot himself in the mouth.
Reports describe the decedent's room as being in severe disarray. Various items such as DVDs, clothes, alcohol bottles, and food were scattered around. A pile of trash bags was noted at the front door. Based on the scene, it is possible that the decedent was living out of his motel room.
A toxicology report revealed that the decedent had a blood alcohol level of 0.54.
Case[]
Investigators initially identified the decedent as "Jenner". The decedent had checked into the motel and had a valid Nevada driver's license under this name. Court paperwork was also found that indicated Jenner had undergone a legal name change many years prior. However, upon further investigation, it was determined that Jenner was alive and the random victim of identity theft. Over the years, Jenner has been homeless and suffering from schizophrenia and at the time of the incident, Jenner was based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The decedent had a German letter in the files of his laptop computer. When investigators translated the letter, it revealed that the author had written it for a sister named "Birgit". In the letter, the author mentions an ex-wife in Perth named "Karen", a possible daughter named "Amy", and a childhood friend named "Dirk Matthias". The author also hints at "past trouble". It is possible that the decedent stole this laptop and deleted the letter that had been written by its previous owner.
It is believed the decedent predominantly resided in Nevada and may have had multiple addresses and post office boxes.
