St. Lawrence County Jane Doe was a woman whose mutilated body was found in Canton, New York, in 1950.
Case[]
On April 5, 1950, a farm worker discovered the nude body of a woman frozen on a snowbank in Canton, New York. The woman had been violently beaten beyond recognition, with her skull being fractured and her jaw being crushed. She had been mutilated, with cuts across her abdomen and down her thighs. She had also been cut open and had several of her internal organs removed. A bloodstained knife was found two miles from where her body was discovered. Investigators believed the murder was sexually motivated based on the disembowelment.
It was suspected the woman's body belonged to Ruth Jock, who disappeared from Malone, New York on January 29 of that year. However, when her husband viewed the body, he stated that it was not her. Three other women were also considered as possible matches. It is suspected the woman was from Canada, given Canton's close proximity to the border.
In 2002, samples of the victim's remains were collected and sent to the state police crime lab in Albany for DNA analysis. Around this time, comparisons to Jock had resumed. The results of the analysis remain unknown.
