Rustenburg Does were nine individuals who were discovered buried together alongside three members of the African National Congress on 17 March 1998 outside of Rustenburg, South Africa.
Case[]
On 17 March 1998, investigators for South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission were led to three graves on a farm outside Rustenburg. The graves were believed to hold the remains of three men, Aaron Makwe, Watson Majova, and Paulos Madiba, who were members of the African National Congress that were abducted and killed by South African security forces during South Africa's apartheid era in 1985. The investigators were led to the graves by an employee of the undertaker company that was contracted by the police to bury the bodies.
When the graves were exhumed, it was discovered that there were four bodies in each grave, totaling 12 victims. The undertaker employee was unable to explain the additional nine bodies. While it is likely these nine people were also victims of the South African security forces, the circumstances are unknown.
