"Poker Jim" was the alias of a legendary poker-playing cowboy who froze to death when going on a trip for supplies for Lower W-Bar Ranch. After picking up the supplies in Glendive, North Dakota, he was last seen ten miles away from the Lower W-Bar Ranch by Harlowe "Tough" Bentley, the foreman of the Horse Camp on Smith Creek.
It was apparent he tried to start a fire based on burnt matches found near his body. His pack horse was found loose nearby, and his saddle horse was tied to the tree and had eaten all of its bark.
Poker Jim is now buried in the cemetery that bears his name in Watford City, North Dakota. Legend has it that a portion of the rock on which he was found lying dead serves as his headstone.
