Unidentified Wiki

Phoenix John Doe was a man who was found murdered in Phoenix, Arizona, on September 11, 1983.

He was identified by the DNA Doe Project in November 2021, although his name has not been publicly released.

Case[]

The victim was located in a field near Baseline Road and South Central Avenue in Phoenix. His cause of death was homicide attributed to head injuries. No identification was found on the victim. Due to the victim appearing poorly nourished, weighing 100 pounds at 5'9, investigators believed the victim may have been a transient.

In March of 2021, the Phoenix Police Department asked the DNA Doe Project to assist in the identification. By then, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office had collected his DNA about a decade ago. The DDP sent the extract to HudsonAlpha Discovery for whole genome sequencing and then to Saber Investigations for bioinformatics. In June 2021, the DNA file was uploaded to GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA. Genealogists eventually located a close cousin to the victim, and a suitable candidate was discovered by mid-July. On November 17, 2021, the DNA Doe Project announced he was identified, but his name has not been released at the request of the PPD and the victim's family. According to the leading team genealogist, he had a family who missed him. It was also stated he was a clever man who faced mental illness and misfortune in his life.

Between the period of the victim's discovery and his identification, someone was convicted of his murder. The suspect, who authorities declined to identify, pleaded guilty, served a prison term, and has since been released. The victim was killed in a drunken altercation.
