Pamela Leigh Walton, formerly known as "Julie Doe", was a transgender woman found deceased in 1988. The cause of her death is undetermined, although the apparent concealment of her body suggested foul play. She was nicknamed by university students researching her case, after a character in an LGBTQ-themed film.
She was identified by the DNA Doe Project in March 2025.
Discovery
Walton’s mummified remains was discovered by a man in an unrecognizable state months after her death. Her skirt was rolled down to her knees, which led to the possibility she was sexually assaulted. It is believed she died elsewhere and was discarded at the scene.
Investigation
She was thought to be a cisgender woman until DNA testing in 2015 revealed a Y chromosome. This indicated the victim was going through or had successfully gone through the process of male-to-female transitioning before her murder.
Isotope testing conducted by the University of South Florida indicated she was native to South Florida. However, this proved to be false after her identification.
The DNA Doe Project took on her case in 2018 to try and locate potential relatives of hers, which proved a successful DNA extraction after three attempts. Genealogy testing found ancestral ties to the Southeastern United States. Surnames of interest were Anaya, Thornton, Robinson, and Hurt.
The DNA Doe Project revealed in 2024 she was likely born in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Her ancestors have ties to central Kentucky, specifically Madison, Fayette, Garrard, and Mercer Counties but isotope testing suggests she spent most of her life in the Florida area. There is a possibility she was not raised by her biological family.
