Owen Ryder was a man whose remains were found in a remote area of outback Northern Territory, Australia, in 2007.
He was identified via genetic genealogy conducted by the Northern Territory Police in 2023.
Case[]
Ryder went missing in August 1999 when he did not return to his home at Kwala Outstation, near Hermannsburg. Police ascertained he had last been seen near Larapinta Drive and Wallace Rockhole Road and conducted a search of the area, but he could not be located. He was declared legally dead by the coroner in 2004.
When his remains were found in 2007, police were aware that Ryder had gone missing nearby. However, DNA technology to confirm his identity was not available until a sample was sent to the Australian Federal Police in 2022.
