Oscar James Nedd, (April 19, 1951 - January 1975), nicknamed "Mr. X" before his identification, was a man whose burned body was found near Interstate 20 in Piedmont, South Carolina by a hunter who saw something wrapped in plastic. He had disappeared three days earlier in New York and had been reported missing.

He was identified in June 2024.

Case[]

Oscar was last seen on January 1, 1975, in White Plains, New York, after a phone call with his sister at his rooming house. She informed him that his nephew, who had been staying with him for about a month, was on the run from the police after shooting a man in Georgia. She advised Oscar to kick his nephew out.

When police searched the home, they found Oscar and his nephew missing. The apartment had numerous bloodstains on the walls, floor, some clothing, and under the mattress. Additionally, Oscar's nephew had been seen carrying an object, consistent with a human body, wrapped in a rug to the trunk of a car.

On January 4, 1975, a hunter discovered Oscar's burned body near Highway 20 in Piedmont, South Carolina, after noticing something wrapped in plastic. He had been beaten and tied up before being doused with gasoline and set ablaze. It is unclear whether he died before or after being set on fire.

An arrest was made in the case, but the suspect was released due to a lack of evidence. In 2020, the Greenville County Coroner's Office exhumed Oscar's remains to extract DNA evidence.
