"Old Ernest" was the nickname or alias of a man whose body was found by laborers on the Banister Ranch on January 28, 1889. An inquest was held by Squire Shan and the jury returned a cause of death verdict as being natural. "Old Ernest", who was described as a "foreigner" in the local press and "eccentric" due to the unrevealed contents of his diary, is buried at the Shiloh Cemetery in Windsor, California.
