"Old Ernest" was the nickname or alias of a man whose body was found by laborers on the Banister Ranch on January 28, 1889. An inquest was conducted by Squire Shan, and the jury determined that his cause of death was natural. Described in the local press as a "foreigner" and considered "eccentric" due to the undisclosed contents of his diary, he was buried at Shiloh Cemetery in Windsor, California.
