"Ms. Mao" was an alias used by Chinese media to refer to a woman who fled her home in Hohhot, China. Her body was discovered in a hospital's mortuary and remained there for several years while her family searched for her. The hospital did not have sufficient records to determine when Ms. Mao passed away and was placed in the mortuary, but it is believed that her body had been there for many years. Despite carrying an ID in her pocket, it was not until September 2020 that the woman was finally identified.
Ms. Mao's identity and the location of the hospital where she was found have never been released to the public.
Case[]
On 22 May 2013, Ms. Mao was reported missing by her husband after fleeing on a bicycle from their residence. Her disappearance was believed to be connected to her depression diagnosis. Despite the efforts of her family, who put up missing person posters and searched for years, there were no sightings of Ms. Mao for eight years. However, her family remained hopeful that she was still alive.
In 2020, Ms. Mao's brothers were notified that her DNA matched a body that had been kept in a hospital morgue for many years as an unidentified corpse. The hospital had no records of the deceased person, so it is unclear how and when Ms. Mao died. However, it is suspected that she had not been transferred to the emergency unit of the hospital while still alive, as her pockets were not searched for identification. The ID card in her pocket had never been checked by hospital or mortuary staff.
Ms. Mao's brothers are attempting to obtain police records to uncover her potential cause of death and whereabouts since her disappearance.
