The argument turned violent, with Chen kicking Xie into a ditch and fatally beating her over the head with a large rock. Chen then buried Xie's body and fled the scene.
Chen moved from Holingol to Daxing'anling Prefecture, Heilongjiang Province, where he lived under a false identity to avoid capture. Xie's skeletal remains were discovered in May 2002.
