Sherman George was a man whose skeletal remains were located near Kingman, Arizona, on January 22, 1996. He was identified in September 2023 with the assistance of Othram, Inc.

Background[]

Sherman George, an Army veteran, was last seen by his estranged family in Los Angeles County in late 1994. Due to the estrangement, he was never reported missing. However, he was known at the time of his disappearance to frequent the Mohave Desert with former Army friends in California and Mohave County, Arizona.

Case[]

Sherman's body was discovered by two men running their dogs and looking for rocks half a mile off Stockton Hill Road at Milepost 8.5 outside of Kingman. He was found in a shallow grave beside a large rock formation under a juniper tree near a gravel pit. The case was then reported to and investigated by the Mohave County Sheriff's Office.

Anthropologists at the University of Arizona's Department of Anthropology determined the remains to be those of a black male between the ages of 30 and 40 with a height between 5'10 and 6'1, but nothing further. His cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head.

In February 2023, the Special Investigations Unit of the MCSO teamed with Othram to determine if advanced DNA testing could assist in the case. Forensic evidence was sent to Othram's laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas, where scientists developed a comprehensive DNA profile. Othram's genealogy team used the profile to generate new leads and identify family members related to Sherman George, tentatively confirming his identification in September 2023. Confirmation tests are currently underway.

Sherman George's homicide remains under investigation, and anyone with information on his case, specifically his military (he is known to have been stationed at Fort Liberty, North Carolina (formerly Fort Bragg)) and post-military activities, should contact the Mohave County Sheriff's Office.
