Michelle was born in Prince Rupert and was a member of the Nisga'a First Nation, both in British Columbia.

In 1986, Michelle was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She lived in various group homes and was involved in various outpatient care programs until 1991 when she moved to Vancouver. She had a son that same year, but Michelle lost custody of him when he was an infant, as she was unable to care for him on her own. Michelle moved to a group home in Pentiction, British Columbia the next year, but still regularly traveled to Vancouver to visit her son. In 1995, she left Pentiction to move back to Vancouver.

Before she vanished, Michelle was a known drug user and sex worker. She resided in the Portland Hotel, located in the Downtown Eastside. Michelle had plans to move to Chilliwack, British Columbia with her boyfriend, but she'd been told there were less mental health resources for her in Chilliwack.
