Marcia Shirree Thomas was a teenager found murdered in California in 2009. She had been reported missing from Reno, Nevada.

She was identified in July 2024.

Case[]

In the late evening hours of September 4, 2009, Marcia was walking on a street in Santa Ana, California, when she was approached by a man in a van. The man, believing Marcia to be a sex worker, negotiated to purchase sexual services and persuaded her to enter the vehicle, not realizing his brother was also present inside. Upon noticing the brother, Marcia attempted to escape and began screaming, leading to an altercation in which she was attacked and killed. The individuals involved then transported her body to a parking lot in Irvine, approximately eight miles away, where they attempted to dispose of it by setting it on fire, though the body was not completely consumed by the flames.

Hours later, a parking lot employee discovered Marcia's body, which had been partially burned. Only some of her clothing was recognizable, with her high heels being identified by their brand tag. Detectives, noting Marcia's height, appealed to the public for assistance in identifying her, believing that a tall woman in high heels would be memorable. Despite releasing a sketch and tracing potential sources for the shoes, no significant leads were developed. Her fingerprints did not match any records in the police database, indicating she had no prior arrests.

In November 2010, Gabino and Zenaido Valdivia-Guzman were identified as suspects after DNA evidence found under Marcia's fingernails linked them to the case. They entered pleas of not guilty and were tried separately. Zenaido's trial in 2016 resulted in a mistrial. In 2022, he was retried and found guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Gabino's trial is scheduled for November 2024.

The van used in the incident has not been located, and Marcia's body was cremated after the necessary DNA, fingerprint, and dental records were obtained.
