Lop Nur John Doe was a man who was discovered in the Danan Lake in Lop Nur, near the city of Hami. Due to the circumstances his body was found in and his clothing, he was initially thought to have possibly been missing biochemist Jiamu Peng, though his DNA was found not to match the decedent.

Case[]

On the 2nd of June, 2007, the mummified body of a man was found lying on his back and a third of his body was covered in sand in the Danan Lake. The skin on his face and feet were noted to be charred, though this may be from them facing the sun. Additionally, his body was noted to have been pointing towards the further reaches of Lop Nur and much of his clothing reflected the fashion trends of the 1980s. Following an autopsy that estimated he may have been dead for 25 years, he was quickly suspected to be Jiamu Peng, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances in Lop Nur during a scientific expedition. Though, a DNA test concluded that the body did not belong to Peng.

In 2005, another man was found in Lop Nur and misidentified as Peng, though it is unknown if his case is connected to the decedent, despite both men dying during the 1980s. Four other bodies are mentioned to have been discovered and suspected to have been Peng from 2005 to 2007, but details about these discoveries are not currently available.
