Kraaifontein Jane Doe was the fifth and only unidentified victim of an unidentified serial killer who killed prostitutes and domestic workers between 1992 and 1996 in the area of Cape Town, South Africa.

Case[]

The victim was found in the town of Kraaifontein on 8 July 1993. Details of this specific murder are unavailable, but it is known the crime scene was staged to look like she was sexually assaulted even though she was not.

Between 1992 and 1996, 19 women, 16 prostitutes, and three domestic workers were found strangled by a garrote in and around the city of Cape Town. The killer would pick his victims up on rainy nights, strangle them with a garrote in his car, then dump their bodies in preselected locations. None of the victims were raped, but the killer staged the scene to make it look like they were, which suggested to authorities that the killer may have been sexually dysfunctional.

In June 1996, the only suspect, an elderly vagrant named George Weir, was arrested and charged for the 16th murder, that of Francis Seliston, based on circumstantial and fingerprint evidence. He was released in September 1997 due to a lack of evidence, and it was later revealed that the fingerprint evidence was planted. The murders remain unsolved.
