During the Great East Japan Earthquake, Abe was hospitalized in the Ogatsu Hospital in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture. The tsunami struck the hospital, killing 40 patients and 24 staff.
On 3 April 2011, a woman's body was found off the coast of the island of Kinkasan in Miyagi Prefecture, nude and badly damaged.
In December 2020, the woman was identified as Kiyoe Abe through DNA testing and from her family recognizing her abdominal surgical scars. She was cremated and her cremains were given to her family.
