Juanita Adams, previously known as "The Lady with the Glass Eye" or "Donna," was a young woman whose remains were found on May 22, 1980, in Oakwood, Georgia. She was identified in 2011.
Case[]
Juanita disappeared from South Dakota when she left the Pine Ridge Reservation in the summer of 1978 to join the American Indian Movement's "Longest Walk." a five-month trek from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., to protest threats to tribal lands and water rights. Authorities believe Juanita later caught a ride with a truck driver in Tennessee and died sometime after this ride.
Juanita's skeletal remains were located near a rest stop in a wooded area near Interstate 985 in Oakwood, Georgia. Examination showed she had a severe head injury before death that resulted in reconstructive surgery, the loss of her right eye, skull fractures, and possibly seizures. Juanita's cause of death is undetermined, but it is suspicious.
In 2010, a family member recognized Juanita's facial reconstruction online and submitted a tip online to NamUs. Authorities were able to confirm the identity of the remains six months later through DNA comparison.
