John Doe III was the fourth canon, but fifth discovered, victim of the Cleveland Torso Murderer.
Case[]
The victim was discovered by a teenage girl walking in the woods near Clinton Road and Big Creek and a homeless camp. Based on the blood that seeped on the ground, it was concluded the victim was killed at the location of discovery. Although he was found nude, bloodied cheaply made clothing was found nearby. Based on the victim’s clothing, long hair, and proximity to a homeless camp, it is speculated he was a hobo who rode in or out of the city through the train tracks.
The victim, called "John Doe III," is also referred to as "Victim #5" of the Cleveland Torso Murderer. Between 1935-1938, the Cleveland Torso Murderer was responsible for the murder and dismemberment of twelve transients and hobos in which only two were ever identified. Investigators believe there are additional victims. Although investigators had several suspects, most notably Frank Dolezal and Dr. Francis E. Sweeney, no one was ever charged and convicted for the murders. Additionally, this is the only West Side victim of the killer.
Other victims believed to be related to the Cleveland Torso Murderer include Lady of the Lake, Tattooed Man, Jane Doe I, Jane Doe II, Jane Doe III, Jane Doe IV, John Doe I, John Doe IV, John Doe V, John Doe VI.
