Janet Gail Carter (née Calhoun), (February 2, 1949 - October 7, 1973) was a woman who disappeared on September 17, 1973 alongside her daughter, Christine "Christy" Carter. Janet's body was found a month later in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in North Carolina.
Case[]
Janet and her ex-husband were in a custody battle over their daughter, Christy, who remains missing today. Investigators have considered the possibility that Janet went into hiding with her daughter and may have entrusted her with someone.
In October 1973, Janet's body was located on a roadside in Bryson City, North Carolina in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The remains were nude and bound; the cause of death was determined to be from asphyxiation.
It is believed, however, that Janet was murdered the day of her disappearance, which may suggest a potential fate of homicide for Christy.
