Henderson Jane Doe was a woman whose skeletal remains were found in Henderson, Nevada on February 5, 1973. She was the first and only unidentified victim of serial killer Wayne Donald Horton who was convicted for her murder.
Case[]
The victim was found in a shallow grave in an open desert south of Las Vegas, about 0.3 miles west of US 93 and 2.5 miles south of Railroad Pass. The majority of the remains were in the grave, but the grave was disturbed by animals, who scattered the remains over a 300–400-yard radius. The remains found consisted of a pelvis, long bones, the mandible, teeth, and fragments of the cranium and other bones. A small amount of hair was also recovered. Alongside the remains in the grave were bedding and wire, suggesting she was tied and wrapped.
On August 3, 1976, Wayne Horton pleaded guilty to a first-degree murder charge relating to the victim. According to him, he met her at Atomic Liquors in May 1972. After a night of drinking and dancing, she began to object to him smoking marijuana while driving. This enraged Horton, and he beat her to death with a jack handle and dumped her body in the desert, where it was later found.[1]
Between 1972 and 1976, Horton killed four people and committed several other crimes, such as rape, robbery, and kidnapping, in Las Vegas. On June 5, 1976, he pleaded guilty to the murders of his shift boss Edward Buccieri and taxi driver William Tinnell and pleaded guilty again in August 3 to the victim and cellmate Calvin Brinson. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and died on January 3, 2010.
