Guji-ri Jane Doe was a woman whose partially dismembered remains were found scattered throughout the Galma Reservoir and the Galma Valley in the village of Guji-ri, South Korea.

Case[]

On 16 June 1990, a fisherman and his friend cast their nets into the Galma Reservoir when they saw an unknown object floating in the water. They later recognized the object as a severed human head. The police retrieved the head and searched the vicinity for the rest of the body and any personal belongings. About 1 km northwest of the head, they discovered a fully skeletonized torso belonging to the same person, lying at the base of the Galma Valley in a dry streambed. Hand and foot bones were also recovered 20-30 cm downstream. However, the police found no clothing, personal belongings, or other remains. The head was too decomposed for identification.

Initially, the police erroneously assumed that the remains belonged to a male who was around 170 cm tall. However, an examination by the National Forensic Service concluded that the decedent was a woman.

Based on her fillings, the police attempted to obtain dental records but discovered no matches. They proceeded to investigate 31 households in Guji-ri and Sairi villages in hopes of finding missing relatives, but all individuals were located. The scope of the search was then widened to include 2,000 households in 8 different villages, yet yielded no results. The police also looked into former employees of nearby businesses, patients who had escaped from mental institutions, and runaway individuals, but they did not find any significant leads. After nine months, the investigation was officially closed, and the case remained unsolved. With the statute of limitations expiring in 2005, no further action could be taken.
