Gheorghe Inculeţ was a man who disappeared from a psychiatric hospital on 11 April 2007. He jumped to his death on 13 April 2007, and his body was identified in May 2012. Between his death and identification, he was suspected of being the Durlești Maniac.

Background[]

Gheorghe Inculeţ was born on 29 May 1973 to Claudia and Ion Inculeţ in the village of Caşunca, Florești District, Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. Gheorghe had a history of mental illness and was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after allegedly murdering his sister and her two-year-old child. He escaped from the hospital on 11 April 2007.

Discovery[]

On 13 April 2007, Gheorghe was found near the Republican Hospital in Chişinău, Moldova. Law enforcement determined he jumped from the 13th floor of the hospital's 16-story building. A witness stated that they saw him on the 13th floor with a Bible in his hand the day before.

Photographs were taken and sent to several hospitals, but no one could identify the man in the photographs. Because no one claimed his body, he went unidentified and was buried in the unknown sector of the Doina Cemetery in Chişinău.

Investigation[]

Before his body was identified, Gheorghe was one of five men publicly suspected of being the Durlești Maniac. Between July 2007 and July 2011, the Durlești Maniac killed and raped six people and attacked and injured five others in and around Durlești, Chișinău, Moldova. The attacks and killings were believed to be connected because of their close proximity and the fact that a shotgun was used in all of the attacks.

Claudia and Ion denied he was the serial killer or that he murdered his sister and her child, but they could not convince law enforcement, who once suspected that they were hiding him.

Identification[]

In May 2012, representatives of the Centru Police Commissariat called Ion to the police station and showed him postmortem photographs of the unknown man who jumped from the Republican hospital five years ago. His father immediately recognized the unknown man as his son, who said that he "had no injuries. He was dressed in new clothes. Only the shoes were the ones bought by his mother, the clothes I do not know where he got them from." Gheorghe remains buried at Doina Cemetery.

As of 2022, the Durleşti Maniac has not been identified or captured. At least one other suspect, Andrei Crăciun, was wrongfully convicted of one of the murders in 2009 and was released in 2013.
