Background[]
Brittnacher initially became known to the public when he successfully subdued an intruder under the influence of drugs during a home invasion in 2012. By the time he disappeared, he had been diagnosed with dementia and departed his residence for unknown reasons, despite his compliance with medication and general self-care.

When the remains were first discovered, police suspected that they belonged to Brittnacher. His NamUs file was removed in August 2023, indicating that he was officially identified around that time. Later news articles confirmed that the remains found did indeed belong to him.
