The Little Angels (Spanish: Los Angelitos) was the nickname given to two babies buried inside the El Carmen church in Angastaco, Salta Province, Argentina.

Case[]

El Carmen is an old Jesuit settlement located in northern Argentina. The site is known for its church, which began to be built in 1600. In 1635, the Jesuits were expelled from the site, leaving the construction unfinished.

At the end of the 19th century, the Miralpeix family bought the site and repopulated the place. The church began to be rebuilt, but work was interrupted by an earthquake in 1929. Reconstruction work was resumed in the 1960s.

In 1969, during reconstruction, the body of a baby was found buried beneath the main floor of the church. It was determined that it was a girl. The quality of the coffin and clothing highlighted that she was from a wealthy family. Later that year, a severe storm uncovered another coffin at the back of the church, containing the body of another baby. The condition of the body did not allow the gender to be determined.

A funeral was held for both bodies and placed in glass coffins near the altar so that visitors could see them.

Burial of people was permitted around the church, but not inside, where the bodies were found. No records were found in the funeral archives of the site that could give clues as to the identity of either baby.

Based on the quality of the clothing and the condition of the bodies, they would have been members of the first families who arrived with the Miralpeix to repopulate the site. However, the identity of both could never be determined.
