Unidentified Wiki

Edwin Rodriguez was a young man whose body was found burning near Interstate 80 and Wolf Creek Township in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

He was identified in late May 2022 and a family friend[2], Nestor Quintanal, is suspected to have killed him.

Case[]

On November 6th, 1980, authorities recovered a burning body near I-80 within the vicinity of Wolf Creek Township, Pennsylvania. While investigators could ascertain some of the decedent's physical attributes, he was unable to be identified due to third-degree burns covering an estimated 70% of his body.

In 2007, DNA was able to be obtained from the remains, allowing for it to be sent to a lab in January of 2019 for testing. Rodriguez was later identified in 2022 with Quintanal quickly being suspected of his murder. According to the family, the two had left their home in Illinois for Florida in the fall of 1980 and never heard from Rodriguez again. Though he is suspected of the boy's murder, Quintanal cannot be formally charged since he passed away in 2002. It is unknown why the two were in Pennsylvania and why he would have murdered Rodriguez.

Sources[]

  1. One source claims Rodriguez was identified in 2019, though the same date is listed in other sources as the date his DNA was sent to a lab. It is not confirmed if that was the true date of Rodriguez's identification
  2. Some sources state that Quintanal was Rodriguez's cousin, but he is also noted as merely a family friend in others. It is not publicly confirmed whether or not Quintanal was his cousin.
