DeLynne "Sugar" Renne Frey was a young woman whose remains were found in the wilderness of Alaska in the mid-1980s.
She was identified in 1989 and is a victim of serial killer Robert Hansen.
Case[]
DeLynne Frey was born in Baltimore, Maryland on June 6, 1963. DeLynne, who worked as a waitress and went by the nickname "Sugar," was last seen in Anchorage, Alaska, in March 1983.
Sources online differ on where and how she was found. Some sources state that she was found at Horseshoe Lake on April 25, 1984, by investigators who were led to the location by serial killer Robert Hansen.[1] It is possible these sources accidentally confused Delynne with Robin Pelkey, who was found at Horseshoe Lake on that date and was identified in 2023. In the initial 1983-1984 investigation, lead Alaskan State Trooper investigator Glenn Flothe speculated Robin's body was DeLynne's.[2] Other sources state she was found on an island in the Knik River by a pilot trying out new tires on August 20, 1985.[3]
As she was found without identification, she was not formally identified and buried as a "Jane Doe" in an Anchorage cemetery. In 1989, her remains were exhumed and formally identified after an Alaskan State Trooper recognized her jewelry in case file photographs. Her remains were eventually cremated and returned to her family in Hawaii.
Between 1971 and 1983, Hansen, a baker and outdoorsman hunter with a history of arson, rape, and theft, raped and assaulted over 30 women and killed at least 17 women, primarily sex workers, in and around the wilderness outside of Anchorage, Alaska. Following his arrest in 1983, he pled guilty to four of the murders and led authorities to 17 gravesites in the Alaska wilderness. However, authorities believe there are more victims based on markings in his aviation map indicating where the victim was buried. Hansen remained incarcerated, serving his 461-year sentence until his death on August 21, 2014.
Other victims of Hansen include Robin Pelkey and Eklutna Annie.
