His remains were returned to U.S. custody on July 27, 2018 and identified April 14, 2020. He was identified alongside [[Jacob Cruz]], who was killed in the Battle of Tarawa in 1943.

David Milano was born on December 23, 1932 to Chicago, Illinois. The youngest of at least two siblings, he attended Bowen High School and was a member of their ROTC program.
