Between 2002 and 2003, police began investigation of the property of Robert Pickton, a multi-million dollar pig farmer from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia.

They found buckets containing the heads, hands, and feet of three separate women. These were identified as belonging to Sereena Abotsway, Andrea Jonesbury, and Mona Wilson, who had all worked as prostitutes in Vancouver's Downtown East Side and had been reported missing the previous year. Upon further investigation, bones were found on the property belonging to an additional four victims (Marnie Frey, Georgina Papin, Brenda Wolfe, and one unidentified Jane Doe).

DNA found through the course of the investigation, as well as personal items found at his property, have been connected to twenty other missing persons cases, and tentatively linked to approximately sixty disappearances from the region. Their remains have not been located, although there is evidence to indicate that he may have put their remains through a wood chipper, mixed their flesh with the pork he sold to the public, or fed the remains to his pigs. The exact number of individuals murdered by Pickton, as well as the year that his killing spree began, is unknown. Pickton himself has supposedly admitted to forty-nine murders in total.

To date, he has been convicted of second-degree murder in six of these cases.
