Ansan Doe was a newborn whose body was found inside of a bag in a trash heap at Wongok Park in Ansan, South Korea. The Wongok district of Ansan is known for housing many migrants and foreign workers, thus the infant is currently theorized to have parents that are foreign to South Korea, namely from Indonesia.

Case[]

On the morning of November 1, 2018, a caretaker at the Wongok Park in Ansan, South Korea, discovered a pink bag lying next to a heap of garbage by a public restroom. Thinking it had just been lost, the caretaker moved it away from the garbage to an area where others could see it and retrieve it if it was theirs. Days would pass with a foul stench gradually beginning to emanate from the bag. Though, the passing janitor and park manager would use a spray on the bag to suppress the smell. Then, on November 11th, the park manager became curious as to why the smell was becoming so unbearable and opened the bag, only to find the decomposing body of an infant wrapped in adult clothing with the umbilical cord still attached. Authorities were immediately contacted, and an investigation began into the bag and the local CCTV.

Ansan shirt

Shirt associated with the infant

Upon investigation, it was found that the infant was far too decomposed to estimate their gender or if there was any trauma to their body. Due to the type of spray used to suppress the smell of the bag, DNA was unable to be extracted from the baby. In addition, the advanced state of decomposition the body was in made it impossible for the autopsy to determine if the baby had been alive when placed in the bag, murdered, or stillborn. The CCTV cameras in the park were analyzed with footage from early October being reviewed as well with no signs of any suspicious individuals in the area. A sanitation worker in the park would state that the bag had been there for at least a month. Due to the park's CCTV only recording an entire month before erasing the data to record again, it is theorized the bag may have been placed in the area in the few days that were lost in the previous recording on the CCTV camera.

Due to the Wongok ward of Ansan having a large population of migrants and foreign workers alongside the shirt found around the infant being described as a style worn by foreigners, it is estimated that the infant may have foreign parents. During interrogations of the public, many citizens had remarked that the shirt appeared to be similar to a style that many Indonesian workers wore in the area. Thus, the authorities classified the case as a public investigation and have distributed over 2,000 flyers about the case in Korean, English, Chinese, Arabic, and many more languages. Since the distribution of the flyers, no further leads or information about the case have been publicly released.
