Anneth Joseph Mangawo was a young woman who was found floating along a dock at the end of 14th Avenue in College Point in Queens, New York.
She was identified on February 12, 2025, but her body went unclaimed.
Case[]
Mangawo was last seen at the residence of the then-United Nations Ambassador to the United States from Tanzania, Grace Mujuma. She had been brought to New York City from her home in Dar es Salaam in 2004 to work as a live-in domestic servant. Mujuma claims that shortly before she disappeared, Mangawo was fired after being caught abusing the children who were under her care. Afterwards, her passport and identification documents were confiscated, and she was supposedly sent to a school to learn English. Mangawo's family believes that the accusations of child abuse are false and that their daughter was murdered by associates of the ambassador on her direct orders shortly after she went missing.
A friend of Mangawo's parents, who also lived in New York City, tried to report her missing to the NYPD, but they would not take a report since she was an adult. Grace Mujuma returned to Tanzania in 2011 without Anneth and was appointed the High Commissioner to Zambia. Tanzanian authorities were unaware of the woman's disappearance until her stepfather filed a missing person's report with police in the Kilimanjaro Region on January 16, 2012. Due to Ambassador Mujuma's status as a foreign diplomat, she was given legal immunity from crimes and could not be questioned without approval from the Tanzanian president. The President of Tanzania at the time, Jakaya Kikwete, declined to intervene in the investigation.
