"Andy" was a man who died of natural causes in Pyrmont, New South Wales, Australia on 28th of August, 2014.
Andy was a homeless man who lived in Cadi Park, Pyrmont for approximately 7 to 10 years prior to his death. He was well known to local residents, and would often be found on a park bench overlooking the water. At night, Andy would often sleep outside a nearby real estate agency. While Andy would accept food and clothing from members of the community, he never attempted to seek help from recognised community support agencies and organisations. One of these organisations was "Pyrmont Cares", led by Peter Devoy who later observed that in the last six months of Andy's life he had put on a considerable amount of weight and was having difficulty walking.
On 26th of August, Devoy was contacted by a local resident and advised that Andy had fallen down a set of stairs. Devoy visited Andy, who told him that he had pains in his chest. Believing Andy to be suffering a broken rib and with Andy refusing to be visited by an ambulance, Devoy provided Andy with more blankets and advised the owners of the real estate agency that Andy was unwell.
On the morning of the 28th of August, a local resident found Andy face-down on the pavement in front of the real estate office. An ambulance was called, but Andy couldn't be revived. Andy's cause of death was later found to be a massive pulmonary thrombo-emboli, and that the emboli was the result of deep vein thrombosis in Andy's right leg. Andy was also suffering from acute bronchitis at the time of his death.
